Why You Should Never Let Toenail Fungus Go Untreated

It starts out as a small white spot under the tip of the toenail and may not seem like a big deal. But toenail fungus is difficult to treat, and over time, it can cause permanent damage.
At our office in Coral Gables, Florida, Dr. Richard Hochman and Dr. Jordan Katz encourage you to schedule an appointment if you suspect you have toenail fungus. Find out why they say you should never let a fungal infection go untreated.
About toenail fungus
Toenail fungus is an infection that grows under the nail. The infection may develop if you have athlete’s foot, a fungal infection in between the toes. You may also pick up the infection walking barefoot in moist public places like the community pool or fitness center locker room.
The infection may first appear as a white or brown spot under the tip of the nail. The spot may then spread and cause thickening, discoloration, or splintering of the nail.
Anyone can get toenail fungus, but it most often affects older adults, athletes, and people with diabetes.
Risks of untreated toenail fungus
Infections are the invasion and multiplication of harmful organisms. Though not all infections are serious, none should go untreated, even toenail fungus. Infections may spread to other parts of your body, creating serious complications.
Untreated toenail fungus may cause toe pain or permanent damage to the nail, affecting appearance.
The fungus may also spread to your skin or blood. These infections are especially troublesome for people at greater risk of complications, like those with a compromised immune system or diabetes.
Treating toenail fungus
Toenail fungus is difficult to treat because of where it grows. Over-the-counter antifungal cream may work if you start as soon as you notice the infection. But if your infection is severe and affects the look and shape of your toe, it’s time for professional help.
After examining the foot and reviewing your medical history, we create a treatment plan to clear up the infection. We may prescribe oral antifungal medications, antifungal creams, or medicated nail polish to get rid of the fungus. It may take time, but medical interventions can clear things up.
Unfortunately, some people experience side effects from the oral medication, or it may not completely get rid of the infection. In this case, we may recommend laser treatment for toenail fungus.
Our office uses the Lunula Laser® for toenail fungus, a low-level laser treatment that targets and kills the fungi without harming the nail. Treatment is painless and takes less than 15 minutes, clearing up infections in about four sessions.
Toenail fungus isn’t a serious infection, unless it’s left untreated. If at-home care isn’t improving the look of your toenails, call our Coral Gables, Florida, office today or request an appointment online.
